A couple of our clubbies joined teams from TMOCC down in Kaiteriteri for this race. Thanks Carol for writing up a little info about their experience for our page. Looks like it could be something to do in the future. Words from Carol...
In the arvo, Moira, Tai and me made up a mixed crew with Kahurangi Tapsell, Ian Hemmingsen, Mark Ashurst and Bec’s Ryder. There was no “Mixed” division….so we got chucked in with the men. If you’re on the ball you would have counted 7 aye! The event had 3 races. Race #1 - a 1 km gut busting mad dash to the shore. Ian sat that race out. Here we are at the finish………in front of a couple men’s crews you’ll notice!!! GREAT TO SEE THE TAURANGA MOANA CLUBS GETTING OUT TO OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD!
Thirteen teams competed this year - 8 Men's crews, 3 Mixed crews and 2 Women's crews. All the crews finished the 30 km race in under three hours. We had 3 teams go from the club with some great results. The day started with heavy fog that fortunately lifted by Race Start, revealing a sunny day. Six Pack crew were winners of the Hine Te Kakara Trophy for the womens division. Thanks for the video Toia!
The first newbie paddle (first paddle session) was a small one due to lots of people playing indoor sports on Thursday nights. We had three clubblies and three new paddlers.
Tuesday nights should be a busier one. Pierre R, Toia, Hiria, Agnes and Andrea are available to help in the waka, with Mike on land. Dates for the 4 programme are: Week 1 intros and contact ph numbers info collected. Tuesday 22nd October, First paddle. Thursday 24th October, Week 2 Tuesday 29th October, Thursday31st October Week3 Tuesday 5th November, Thursday 7th November Week4; Tuesday 12th November, Thursday 14th November Some of our club members paddled out to Karewa on Saturday 19 October. 5 teams went out along with a few singles who tagged along for the ride. Gnarly sea with a wind chop from the west hitting the waka's ama side on the way out. A few unexpected water changes and tip practice on the W6 and W1's as well just for good measure. Karewa Island is 12 km out from Mt Maunganui. To the north of Karewa is The Taranaki shipwreck . Hiiria will be running newbies trainings Sunday mornings from October for anyone who wants to give Waka a go.
